The American bald eagle appears as inlay and brasses on furniture, carvings on chairs and girandole bull’s eye mirrors, and decoration on shop and tavern signs, folk art, plates and pitchers, and many other places. In 1912, Japan presented flowering cherry trees to
our nation’s capital. After work on Friday,
celebrate the 100th anniversary of Japan’s gift and
Washington’s annual rite of spring, beautiful cherry
blossoms! Sample cherry cocktails, such as a
chocolate cherry martini and “cherry blossom,” or
enjoy wine while having tasty hors d’oeuvres and
viewing a wide array of antiques, and join us as we
toast 100 years of glorious spring blossoms.

Join us for brunch and an illustrated lecture by
Susan Schoelwer, curator at Historic Mt. Vernon,
entitled "Martha Washington and the Decorative
Arts." Ms. Schoelwer has written and lectured on
both American decorative arts and women's
history. Her most recent publication is a catalog of
the needlework collection of the Connecticut
Historical Society, where she previously served as
Director of Museum Collections. Ms. Shoelwer
holds a doctorate in American Studies from Yale
and a master's from the Winterthur Program.

Crump, who contributed 90 historic recipes
adapted for today’s kitchens to Dining with the
Washingtons, Mt. Vernon’s long-awaited book
exploring the menus and entertaining style of
George and Martha Washington. Ms. Crump will
discuss and sign the new book, which is ideal for
veteran and novice cooks alike, as well as the
revised second edition of her culinary classic,
Hearthside Dining, while those who attend enjoy
samples of select historic recipes. Copies of both
books will be available for purchase.
